“Stars are beautiful, but they may not take an active part in anything, they must just look on for ever. It is a punishment put on them for something they did so long ago that no star now knows what it was. So the older ones have become glassy-eyed and seldom speak (winking is the star language), but the little ones still wonder.”

this is my favourite quote of all time. i could never force myself to sit down and read the entire book, but i’ve read the one paragraph containing this quote countless times; i could recite it word for word. j.m. barrie certainly has a way with words.
Aww sorry to hear about that anon. I always get a little sad when I’m reading that last chapter, so here, have a Granny Wendy hug

Hi! I’m glad you asked that actually. It was not written by JM Barrie, nor does it appear per se in any of the adaptations. There are a couple of lines towards the end of the movie Hook that are very similar, I guess that’s where it came from:
Thud Butt: Don’t leave us Peter, and don’t say goodbye.
Too Small: What’s goodbye?
Ace: It’s going away, that’s what it is. Forgetting about us all over again.
So there you have it, somehow it was jumbled up into one quote and attributed to JM Barrie, though it was probably written by JV Hart (the script-writer for Hook) :)
